Village Maintenance Worker

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Assists in a variety of Village of Arkport/Public Works construction, maintenance and repair activities; does related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: This is an important maintenance position in the Village service intermediate between Motor Equipment Operator and Laborer. Thus, it is a semi-skilled position involving some duties of each of the above titles. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Village Maintenance Supervisor. Direct supervision may be exercised over the work of laborers.

EXAMPLES OF WORK: (Illustrative only)
• Operates a truck to transport workers, tools, stones and other material;
• Operates snowplow and sander;
• Works with road crew cleaning, patching and resurfacing streets;
• May supervise laborers in performing any of the above duties

FULL PERFORMANCE KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND PERSONAL CHARACTERISTICS:
• Working knowledge of the use of basic simple hand tools and equipment used in the performance of manual work such as shovels, picks, brooms, hammers, etc.;
• Working knowledge of the methods used in street and sidewalk repair
• Basic knowledge of building cleaning methods, procedures and equipment;
• Ability to follow simple oral and written instructions;
• Ability to repeatedly lift 50 pounds or more;
• Willingness to perform routine manual work;
• Willingness to work outdoors under all weather conditions;
• Thoroughness, dependability, reliability;
• Physical endurance, manual dexterity
• Mechanical aptitude;
• Physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position

ACCEPTABLE TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Six months of experience in general labor or construction work

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of an appropriate level, valid New York State driver’s license will be required at time of appointment and must be maintained on a continuous basis throughout the term of appointment.
